MY AFRICA

“I was born in Durban and spent the first four years of my life there. My father was a minister for seamen. He really wanted to take us on trips to Zululand, so he bought a motorcycle to take us on adventures. In the picture I’m sitting on my mother Elisabeth Margrethe’s lap, behind my dad Ernst. The woman on the left is called Hanna Stabell and she was the church organist. We often went down to the beach, which is one of my earliest memories: a monkey came up to me and stole a peanut. I took it back. Suddenly the monkey came back. This time it took the whole bag of peanuts. I suppose I was about four at the time. “
